The Family Of PETER McGREGOR and MARY ANN WILSON



Peter (b. February 25, 1835, at Waterdown, Ontario, - December 1, 1920, at Waterdown) . He spent his late teens at Limestone Hall, owned a farm in Nelson Twp., operated a general store in Cedarville and established a saw mill in Dundalk, where he became the local magistrate and was also noted as the best tooth-puller in the district.

Peter's first wife was Mary Ann Wilson (b. 1835 in Nelson, the sixth of eight children in the family of Janet Carr and William Wilson - buried December 25, 1905, at Dundalk and later was moved to Waterdown). Peter and Mary Ann were married on May 3, 1855, and four of their children were born on their farm in Nelson before they moved to Dundalk, as follows:


1. JANET MARIE McGREGOR, (b. 1861) m. James Marshall in 1920. There were no children and both are buried in Milton, Ontario.


2. JOHN RUSSELL McGREGOR (b. February 24, 1863, - d. October, 1940, in Hamilton) m. Mary Emile Robinson (b. October 21, 1866 - d. 1931 in Paris, Ontario). Both are buried in the Pioneer Union Cemetery in Waterdown. I knew Great Uncle John as "Uncle John Who Knits". Their children were:

A. HELEN MARIE McGREGOR (August 11, 1892 - June 26, 1970) m. Rev. Henry Charles Frederick Cocks in 1888. Their children were:
1. John Henry "Greg" Cocks (b. December 1, 1921 at Gore Bay) m. Virginia Goldingham at Grimsby, Ontario, on September 14, 1957, and their children were Janet Patricia Cocks (Halifax) and James Henry Dalrymple Cocks.
2. Harvie Trist Cocks (b. July 27, 1926, at Espanola) m. Catherine Evans at Kingston, Ontario, on May 14, 1955. Their children were Andrea Mary Cocks (Halifax), Stephen Charles Cocks (Halifax), Hilary Orme Cocks (Honolulu) and Wendy Jane Cocks (Victoria).
B. JEAN RUSSELL McGREGOR (May 15, 1894, in Toronto) m. Havelock Dwight Hulbert (b. 1888). There were no children.
C. MARGARET DOUGLAS McGREGOR (October 15, 1895 at Gore Bay - October 30, 1962, in Edmonton, Alberta.) Dr. John Alton (May 17, 1888 in Sundridge, Ontario - May 10, 1961 in Lamont, Alberta) married Douglas on June 17, 1922). John was a physician at Dr. Archer Memorial Hospital in Lamont for many years. Their children were:
1. Jean Elizabeth Alton (October 4, 1923 in Lamont) m. Leonard Milton Eckel on November 8, 1943 (later desceased). They had one child, Wendy Elizabeth (Eckel) Kibblewhite. Jean Elizabeth m. Edward James Kibblewhite on July 9, 1955, and their children were: Douglas James Kibblewhite and David Kibblewhite.
2. Nancy Susan Alton (November 15, 1924, in Lamont) m. Dr. Kenneth Allan McMurchy (b.June 2, 1923) on August 6, 1949, in Edmonton. Their children were: Laurie Susan McMurchy (in Lamont), Greg Douglas Duncan McMurchy (in Edmonton), Geoffrey Ian McMurchy (in Lamont) and Shannon Elizabeth McMurchy (in Edmonton).
3. Dr. John Douglas McGregor Alton (February 18, 1926, in Lamont) m. Mary Jane Schlosser (August 26, 1930) in Edmonton on December 26, 1951, and their children were: John Alton (in Liverpool), David Alton (in Edmonton), Heather Alton (in Edmonton), Susan Helen Alton (in Edmonton) and Bruce McGregor Alton (in Edmonton).


3. PHOEBE LOUISE McGREGOR (b. March 4, 1868, near Waterdown - d. March 19, 1948, in Toronto) was married in Dundalk on April 20, 1887 to Rev. John A. Ross (b. February 24, 1854, in a log cabin north of Uxbridge, Ontario - July 26, 1942, in Toronto). Their children were:
A. Ewart Stanley Ross (August 8, 1888, at Meaford, Ontario - drowned August 30, 1906, at Lindon Beach, Lake Erie).
B. Mary Fraser Ross (April 1, 1890, at Meaford - April 22, 1965, at Toronto) m. John Wilfred MacPherson (1891 - 1934) of Belleville, who had four children with his first wife, Iva Harry. There were no further children.
C. Phoebe Jean McGregor Ross (August 21, 1898, in Churchill - June 24, 1973, in Toronto). She remained single.
D. Marjorie Isobel Ross (November 4, 1902, in Churchill - April 28, 1985, at Wasaga Beach) m. Mervin Frederick Noble (January 10, 1905 - 1987) on May 17, 1939. Fred had one son, Gordon Noble (December 25, 1932), with his first wife and another son with Marjorie:
1. Donald Fraser Noble (June 6, 1942) remained single.
E. John "Jack" Caven Alexander Ross (February 6, 1904, in Churchill - December 29, 2000, in Oshawa) m. Beatrice Leona Alice Badgley (November 17, 1906, in Lansing,Michigan while her father was working there - May 6, 1998, in Oshawa, Ontario). They were married on July 6, 1929, by Rev. John A. Ross in Toronto and they had two children born in Oshawa:
1. John Douglas Ross (b. May 11, 1930) m. Patricia Dianne Bassett (b. January 21, 1942, in Toronto) on July 1, 1967, and they had two children: Jennifer Elizabeth Ross and Robert Douglas Ross.
2. Marilyn Joan Ross (b. October 27, 1934) m. Bertram "Bert" Lloyd Beckell (May 23, 1930) on September 11, 1954, in Oshawa and they had two children: Jeffrey Lloyd Beckell and Robert Alan Beckell.


4. WILLIAM WILSON McGREGOR (probably born at Dundalk in 1869 - d. May 17, 1948, in Vancouver) m. Annie Christie, who died about three months before her husband. Great Uncle Bill was a light-hearted "drummer" for Ashdown's, and retired (having been a successful salesman) at the age of 45. There were no children.


5. MARY PETRICIA McGREGOR (b. November 12, 1879, at Dundalk, Ontario - d. December 20, 1969, in Drumheller, Alberta) m. Alexander "Sandy" Peter Hanley at the home of her brother William Wilson McGregor in Cranbrook, BC, on September 6, 1914. Since Sandy was a salesman, they lived in Medicine Hat, Alberta, as well as in Hatton and Wapella, Saskatchewan, before settling in Drumheller, Alberta, in 1921. They had two children.
A. Janet Elizabeth Hanley (b. June 2, 1915, in Wapella) m. Henry Gerrie Ward (June 15, 1913, in Edmonton - August 30, 1976, while driving to Vancouver) on August 5, 1940, in Drumheller. They lived in Edmonton, Alberta. Their children were:
1. William Peter Ward (b. February 11, 1943, at Wetaskiwin) m. Patricia Caroline Suitor (b. October 11, 1943) on September 30, 1967. (Living in Kingston)
2. John Edward Henry Ward (b. May 3, 1946, in Edmonton) is married and living in London, Ontario.
B. William Hanley (b. September, 1917, died at 3 months).
