JEDBURGH ABBEY

This was the site of earlier shrines and churches of the 8th century. It was founded as a priory in 1138 by King David I of Scotland, but had been well established as a church by 1080. Elevated to an Augustinian abby by 1154, its structure was completed by 1285. However, the building was to be left in ruins following attacks by English armies during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
