THE VARSITY - 1954

FINAL ISSUE

Each year around the beginning of March, there was generally a crisis involving the publication of The Varsity newspaper. Rarely was the suggestion made that final exams were near.

Most often the editor created a situation by devoting an issue to some "forbidden" topic, which would guarantee that SAC (the Student Administration Council for the university) would sack the editor. Then the entire staff would resign in protest.

Another crisis could evolve when an editor needed to be replaced. There just never seemed to be any reliable procedures in place.

In this Final Issue, seven pages were devoted to the Year in Review. Vic obtained an extraordinary amount of coverage. The "Centrefold" contains pictures of "The McCarthy Effigy Burning" (picture of the year), "A Snow Sculpture on the Lawn of Annesley Hall", and "The Bob Apple Battle" (for which your editor held a whistle to direct traffic).
