Anne (Weldon) Tait sent the following regrets to Dennis - - -
I am so up to my neck with work that I can't get away for the reunion weekend, but if you have a chance on Saturday at U of T, could you mention the culmination of the last 9 years of my life -- a ground-breaking film co-production with China called IRON ROAD which, through a love story, celebrates the Chinese railroad workers' contribution to the transcontinental railroad that held our country together.
IRON ROAD has its gala premiere on June 14th - a Sunday afternoon screening, with the star actors -- Peter O'Toole, Sam Neill, Sun Li and Luke Macfarlane talking on screen about their experience making the film - plus a reception afterwards. http://www.yorku.ca/perform/ 416-736-5888.
The longer 2 part version of IRON ROAD will air on CBC Television two Sunday nights Aug 9 and 16 8-10 pm

Don Ranney wrote the following at his website:
All my life I tried to tell the truth - when I was a surgeon/missionary in India in the '70s, teaching anatomy for 20 years to University of Waterloo students, and writing reports on injured victims of motor vehicle accidents after retiring from UW.
Now I've written a novel, and a novel is a work of fiction. But a good writer usually writes fiction based on experience. Even in history books the facts are sometimes twisted a little to make a more compelling story. All truth, even if stated to be factual, is told as perceived by the teller, that is, from the perspective of the one who is relating the facts. We see this in newspaper reports all the time. So this novel, written in part by my friend, Ray Wiseman, is based on our personal experiences. But so as not to offend, the names have been changed and we disguise our true identities. Although I am a Canadian who studied surgery in England and went to India as a married man with three children, I portray myself in this book as a tall, good-looking, American. (I really had fun doing that.) The events we describe really did happen, though not necessarily to us or in exactly the way described.
When Cobras Laugh (April, 2008) is a fact-based fictional account of an unmarried American orthopedic surgeon and a married Canadian commercial artist who go as missionaries to India and South Africa respectively. Both are sent home in disgrace for breaking mission rules that represent the very opposite of what Jesus Christ taught we should do. This novel glistens with humor, tension and intrigue. It carries a powerful message that will disturb some readers. It is not about saving souls, but is a dark tale about racial prejudice, cultural conflicts, jealousy and deception.
My years in India had a disasterous effect on me. If you want that story you will find it here.
